A restricted key is a key design that is protected by a legal patent, a distributor agreement or both, and provides the end user with the knowledge that no one can get a key reproduced without the consent of the appropriate persons. Although there are barrels and cylinders produced to apply restricted key systems to most types of locks, they are most commonly used in commercial and industrial applications where there are multiple key holders.

There are different types of restricted keys available. They can differ in the physical shape, profile or design, or the way in which they operate the cylinder. Each different designed key will have its own patent expiry date, dependent on the date it was issued.

The security of the cylinders themselves can vary from brand to brand. While most restricted keys use the same internal principles as a standard house key, there are different design available which are deemed virtually impossible to manipulate open.
